  This fortification was built as the Murray tower, but was popularly named Murney by the locals, in honour of the guy who originally owned the land it's on. The engraving on the side was crudely changed by replacing the second R with an N, so it - sort of - reads "Murnay Tower". It is a type of fortification known as a Martello tower, named, of course, after Mortella Point on the Mediterranean Island of Corsica. Confusion about names aside, this is the end point in the development of stonework fortifications. It was built in 1846, and was immediately made obsolete by the developmentof explosive artillery shells. The walls are many metres thick, and are shaped to deflect cannon balls. The roof was originally a light timber construction, intended to be rapidly dismantled when being readied for action, revealing an upper floor that bristled with heavy (26 pound) cannon.
