Praktica BC‑1 (Electronic) The Praktica BC‑1 was released in 1984 as a successor to earlier models such as the B100 and MTL5. It stood out from its predecessors thanks to a modern LED viewfinder, exposure compensation, and an electronically controlled shutter. Specifications Production period: mid-1980s (1985–1988) Manufacturer: Pentacon Dresden, former East Germany (DDR) Series: Praktica B-series, designed to compete with Japanese camera brands Technical features Shutter: Electronically controlled vertical focal-plane shutter (40 s – 1/1000 s); 1/90 s works mechanically without batteries Metering: TTL metering with both auto and manual exposure modes Viewfinder: Red LEDs indicate the selected shutter speed Lens Mount & Compatibility With the B-series, Pentacon introduced a new bayonet system: the PB-mount (Praktica Bayonet). This was a key step in catching up with Japanese manufacturers who had already widely adopted bayonet lens systems. The PB-mount is faster, more modern, and electronically compatible. Lenses used: Praktica 50mm f/1.8 Praktica 28mm f/2.8 Praktica 35–70mm f/3.5–4.5 Export & Alternate Branding The BC‑1 was also sold under different names in Western Europe, such as: Jenaflex AM-1 Revueflex BC These models were targeted mainly at Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK. Historical & Economic Background Praktica cameras were a vital source of income for the DDR, sold at low prices in the West to bring in hard currency. Although the B-series represented a technological leap for Praktica, it lagged behind Japanese rivals like Canon, Minolta, and Nikon, which offered faster shutters, more advanced metering, and more reliable electronics. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Pentacon was dismantled and privatized. Praktica largely disappeared as an independent manufacturer and was later acquired by West German investors. The last Praktica film cameras were sold in the early 1990s. Later digital models were mostly badge-engineered Asian imports, unrelated to the original East German design legacy. #PrakticaBC1 #PrakticaCamera #Pentacon #EastGermanCamera #VintageSLR #35mmCamera #FilmIsNotDead #ShootFilm #AnalogPhotography #VintageCameraGear #PBMount #ManualFocus #FilmCameraLove #SLRPhotography #PrakticaBSeries #RetroPhotography #ClassicCameraGear #CameraHistory #OldSchoolSLR #VintageGlass #Praktica50mm #Praktica28mm #Praktica3570 #CameraCollector #ColdWarCamera #DDRTech #ViewfinderLove #TTLmetering #EastBlocTech #FilmRevival
