Three Film Stocks, One Lens: Zairre Wright with the Atoll Ultra-Wide 2.8/17 Art Lens

1

Hot and fresh from California, the now San Diego-based photographer and Lomographer Zairre Wright, a.k.a. zairre, is the next tester of our Atoll Ultra-Wide 2.8/17 Art Lens in a long line of photographers, many being eager to get their hands on a prototype. We once interviewed Zairre about his impeccable documentary repertoire, and now he's back to share how he made the best out of his few days with the lens. He ran three different Lomography film stocks through his camera and traveled to three different places with it, showing he can master the ultra-wide world in any situation.

Hello Zairre! It’s great to have you here at Lomography. First off can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi, thank you, it's nice to be here! My name is Zairre Wright I’m based in beautiful San Diego California. I got into film photography at the beginning of 2019 and have been obsessed ever since.

How did you get into photography and why do you still shoot film?

I got into film photography from going to these events that they host here in San Diego as well as a few other major cities called Beers and Cameras, where I was getting into photography and saw all people there using film cameras and I remember seeing their images and being like dang that looks fire! While I went there all the time, one of my buddies Bert ended up gifting me a film camera and I’ve been hooked ever since.

In the beginning, I shot film to really get into the behind-the-scenes of how making a photo was done so I taught myself the whole process of shooting to printing and everything in between. Nowadays I am mainly with it for the community and because I can’t stand editing digital images.

What’s your favorite subject to shoot?

My favorite subject to shoot is skateboarding by far.

How was it shooting with the Atoll Lens?

Yo, I loved this lens! I cannot wait for the one I backed on the Kickstarter to arrive, I knew it was going to be awesome. I used it in a lot of different scenarios and can’t wait to have it for everyday use.

What camera did you shoot with it?

I used this lens on both the Leica M4-P and the Leica m240.

What is the widest lens you ever shot?

The widest I’ve ever shot was a 6.5mm fisheye lens for skating.

How did the Atoll Lens complement your style?

I’m used to shooting the 28mm focal length so it was surely different but I got to say it's perfect for getting a lot in one scene.

You shot a lot indoor and outdoors, was it easy to move from tight to really big spaces with this lens?

Indoors is nice and easy with even light and having the ability to get opened up to 2.8 outdoors was a breeze I love how this lens renders on film.

From the pictures you sent us, do you have a favorite one?

Man, it's hard to say but I'll have to go with the one shot I have on LomoChrome Purple overlooking the coast into the water of La Jolla shores, it’s SO SHARP!

How would you incorporate this lens into your workflow?

I can see myself using this lens for a lot of portrait shots even though I didn’t use it for that while I had it this time around as well as A LOT of skateboarding photos, and talk about a great lens for landscapes and camping moments. I will be using this a lot.
