Camera Collection: Ståle's (sierravictor) Treasured Gear

11

His first camera was a treasured SLR passed down to him by his father during his teenage years. In 2009, he chanced upon a compact camera that marked the beginning of his gear hunting sprees. Since then, his camera collection grew from two to 87. All thanks to his family and friends, who gift him with various analog cameras, and to his persistence in scouring online shops.

Fast Facts:

Number of cameras? 87
Number of accessories? I don’t know. I have many.
Number of films? 138.
Biggest buy/most expensive items? In 2009, I bought a compact camera,Ricoh GX 200, with all the extras for CA USD 1000.
Sweetest steal/cheapest scored items? That’s a Canon EOS 300 for £1! The seller said that it wasn’t fully tested. Fortunately, it works just fine. It’s the same EOS 300 that I use today.
Favorite photo taken with your favorite gear? I think i have to say the photos in my oldest black and white albums: Karmøy in B/W, Canon EOS 300 and The Kristiansand album, no 9.

Please tell us about yourself, what you do, and what you are passionate about.

I’m a 47 old bachelor living on the island Karmøy down in the southwest of Norway. I have four brothers. For those who know where Bergen and Stavanger is, the island where I live is somewhere between them.

My first camera was a Nikon FE which I inherited from my father who died in 1988. In 1992, I become a student in analytical chemistry in Kristiansand, Norway. During my stay there, I became a member of a photo club called “Blender 11” or “Aperture 11”. It was there where I shot my first black and white pictures which can be seen in The Kristiansand album, no 9.

Sadly, I haven’t had access to a darkroom since. My house doesn’t have a suitable room for it. It’s my intention to shoot more black and white photographs this year using medium format cameras. Last winter, I used a Holga 135 BC which I think gave a nice vintage feel to the pictures.

I also love fishing. Sadly, my boat is on land waiting for me to do a little bit of repairs on it. I also need to buy a new outboard because the old one is already broken.

How long have you been collecting film gear and how did it start?

In 2009 when I bought a new camera, a Ricoh GX 200. During the last ten years, my friends and family have been giving me their old cameras but collecting really took off when I started buying cameras in Norway and on Ebay.

Can you possibly itemize every camera, film roll, and accessory you own?

Have you used every camera in your collection or you just adore them from the camera shelf?

No, not at all. But it’s my goal to use those that still work. Some are already broken. Some I don’t have a film for. (126 films to be exact).

Will you ever part with your collection?

I have sold about nine or ten cameras already. But i won’t sell those that I inherited from my father and grandfathers.

What is your favourite camera? Film? Accessory? Please also explain why.

My favorite camera is Nikon FE because it feels so solid and well-built and I have good lenses for it. I also like the Sprocket Rocket because it gives nice, big negative.

I prefer shooting using a Kodak Ektar 100 because of its fine grain and great colors.

For accessory, my Cullmann 2904 tripod. It has markings horizontally and vertically every five degrees so it’s easy to make endless panoramas with great accuracy. You can stitch the negatives together using a computer.

Do you think you’ll ever stop collecting? Why or why not?

At least, I won’t buy so many in the future. My collection is becoming a bit big for my storage.

Is there a camera you still don’t own and want to be part of your collection soon? What is this and why?

I’d love to own a Mamiya 6 MF with a 50mm, 75mm and a 150mm lenses plus a panoramic adapter instead of a Hasselblad XPan which many loves. I think it’s better to use a handheld one because it’s really a big “compact” in design. The panoramic adapter is also a nice extra, of course.

Any last words?

Thank you to the Lomography Community! I have Lomo-friends all over the world now. I also receive nice comments and a lot of interest in my pictures which helped me become more active with my hobby.
