My First Lomo Affair: Poglad and his LC-A

Paul Taylor of Aberdeen looks back on his first foray into Lomography with a refurbished LC-A.

Location: Aberdeen, Scotland

Please tell us more about yourself and what you do.

My name is Paul. I am 45 years old and I work as a computer programmer. I live in Scotland, a very beautiful and historic nation which offers a lot of opportunities to practice photography. However, the weather is often cloudy and it rains for most of the year. When it’s raining, I stay indoors and enjoy the company of my cats Rosie and Ellie. They sometimes model for my photographs, too.

When was your first try of a Lomography camera or film? What product was it?

Although I had a 35mm camera when I was younger, I had naturally progressed to using a digital camera. Then in July 2015 I decided to try something new for summer – something that’s real which I could be proud of and say “I did that last summer.” So I bought a refurbished Lomo LC-A and some Kodak Ultramax 400 and headed to Aberdeen’s beach.

Was the Lomography product yours or did you borrow it from a relative or friend?

It was mine. The story of Lomography and the LC-A inspired me to buy this camera. The camera I got was a 1989 model from my teenage days. The camera and I are now older and we are discovering new things together.

How was the experience? Any funny or strange occurrences?

I really enjoyed using this camera. The controls are simple yet powerful. Because the camera is small and quiet, I was able to shoot from the hip as I walked along the beach esplanade. It did not draw the attention of the people who were enjoying that summer evening. The experience was totally different from shooting with a digital camera as I couldn’t look at any screen to see whether the photo I took was good or not. Shooting with the LC-A was much more relaxing and enjoyable.

Have you used that Lomography product again? Why or why not?

Yes, I have used my LC-A many times and with a variety of films. Having an automatic exposure makes it a reliable camera even in dull weather. I love it so much that when my grandmother ask what I wanted as a gift last year I chose the Lomo LC-A 120 so that I can have the same kind of experience I had with this camera in medium format.

Can you share us your favorite or most memorable shot from that First LomoAffair of yours? Why is this your favorite?

Without a doubt, this is my favorite photo from my first roll with the LC-A. I did not see this couple coming until they were already close by but the LC-A’s zone focus enabled me to get the shot fast without even lifting the camera to my eyes. The couple looked so happy and carefree. I think that he has just proposed to her and they are beginning their new life together.

How did this camera affect your love for Lomography/film photography?

It ignited my interest in street photography and now I always carry a camera with me.
